Family Law Paralegal

Family Law Paralegal

The best paralegals thrive on attending to the details that most people would just gloss over. Organization, structure, and order are part of their DNA. They seamlessly manage mounds of paperwork, keep their cases on track, manage clients, and anticipate the needs of the attorneys they work for.

Bliss Law Group (BLG) is hiring THE BEST Family Law Paralegals to join our growing team.  If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you!  (If this sounds like someone you know, please send them our way!) We have opportunities in our Tacoma and Olympia offices.

ABOUT THE ROLE

In this highly visible role, you’ll be engaging with clients, drafting documents, performing research, managing calendars, and assisting with mediation and trial preparation, all the while adhering to the rules of professional ethics.

You’ll also hold the title of resident magician, miracle worker, and mind reader.  Okay, so that last one might be a bit facetious, but a paralegal that knows a declaration needs to be done and gets a draft to the attorney before the attorney asks for it is indispensable to that attorney.

Key Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:

  • Establishing and nurturing relationships with BLG attorneys and other team members.
  • Developing a rapport with each client and understanding their story, pain points, and goals for their case.
  • Managing calendars: including scheduling and tracking deadlines, appointments, hearings, etc., and ensuring no deadlines are missed.
  • Maintaining complete and pristine client files, including using standardized file naming conventions.
  • Drafting compelling pleadings, motions, and declarations
  • Completing standardized dissolution and other court forms
  • Preparing and responding to discovery requests
  • Drafting general correspondence to clients, opposing parties, 3rd parties, etc.
  • Filing documents; arranging for service of documents
  • Providing regular and timely updates and communication to clients

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Curiosity – Do you have an innate drive to get to the bottom of things?  When someone tells you a bit about themselves, are you interested in their bigger story?
  • Attention to Detail – While some folks believe “done is better than perfect,” that’s not a mantra well-matched to paralegal work.  Good enough is not always good, and an excellent paralegal will check and re-check information to ensure accuracy.
  • Writing Skills – A lot of cases are like gigantic puzzles, and it’s your job to turn thousands of pieces of information into a coherent story. Being able to translate details into a compelling case can be the difference between winning and losing.
  • Reading Skills – You’re going to spend a lot of time reading everything from case law to documents specific to a client, so being able to read — and comprehend! — lots of data without your eyes glazing over is important.
  • Research Skills – Sometimes you’ll need to find the proverbial needle in the haystack — which can often be the most tedious as well as the most gratifying job.  Honing your research skills so you know which sources are to be trusted, how to collect and document information, and how to effectively share your findings is key to your success as a paralegal.
  • Patience – Patience is one of the most important traits a paralegal can possess! You’ll often be dealing with a variety of different personalities, and some people who are stressed and not in a great place in their life. Being patient enough to listen, empathize, and not allow bad attitudes to influence you is essential.
  • Poise – Being able to adapt and having stability/stress tolerance is especially important for Family Law paralegals. Those with high poise are great at adapting, accepting feedback, dealing with ambiguity, and coping with pressure.
  • Computer Savvy – You embrace the use of technology to increase efficiency and enhance the client experience.
  • Emotional Intelligence –The ability to listen, understand and empathize with others is key when working with Family Law clients.  The paralegal who can develop a rapport and communicate effectively with clients and coworkers alike, is an asset to their firm.
